1927 - 2014

Monte (Mont) Lamoine Carl was born in Belvedere, Nebraska on August 12th, 1927, to Ryle Joseph and Zora Mae Phelps Carl. He departed from this life with his wife of 63 yrs and 50 weeks and his four children at his bedside on July 5, 2014 at the Diversicare of Council Grove, He was 86 years, ten months, twenty-three days.

Monte moved to Kansas with his family at an early age where he grew up at several places throughout Morris County. He attended grade schools at Hill Springs, Sunflower and the “little cracker box” as he called it, north of the Council Grove reservoir. He attended one year at Wilsey High school and the next three years at Diamond Valley High School in Burdick, where he graduated in 1945. He served in the Merchant Marines for a year before enlisting in the US Army in 1946. Monte was a machine gunner, while stationed in Trieste, Italy, as part of the peace keeping mission in the area following WWII. He was discharged in 1948. At the conclusion of his service, he returned home to begin farming with his father. He also drove a cattle truck for Jay Francis Truck Line.

In 1950, he married Illa Irene Illk. Of this marriage they were blessed with four children. Also in 1952, Monte began a 42 year career of driving school children on several bus routes and to ball games. For many years, while he was establishing his own farming operation, he was in partnership in a cattle operation with the Roe Cross Ranch. In 1970, he expanded their farming operation, which included a cow/calf operation and a farrow to finish hog operation, all the while expanding acres of farm ground.

Monte loved to work hard all year and then take a couple weeks off to travel with family and later with friends. They traveled to all 50 states, Canada, and Mexico. He loved to play cards, dancing, casinos, and had a passion for old Chevy cars, restoring several. His favorite was a 41 convertible.

Monte was preceded in death by his parents, Ryle and Zora Carl, brother, Ryle Carl Jr and sister Donna Coover.

He is survived by his wife Illa of the home, Mick Carl and wife Marty of Raymore, Missouri, Tony Carl and wife Jeynese of Wilsey, Jolene Spain and husband Bobby of Buchanan, Tennessee, and Pat Carl and wife Sharon of Conway Springs. Grandkids Nathan Carl and wife Heather of Scottsdale, Arizona, Lacey Bozelle and husband Justin,of Bremerton, Washington, Tierney Taxted and husband SSG E6 Corey, of Milford, Karne Carl and daughter Kadence of Wilsey, Javyn Carl of Emporia, Amanda Smith and husband Jordan and son Shadow of Frankfort, Kentucky, Samantha Hemingway of Nashville, Tennessee, Jacqueline Nation and husband Capt Andrew and son Luke of Wichita, Jason Carl and wife Beth of Conway Springs, and Joseph Carl of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister Sharon Mock and husband Ralph of Council Grove; and brother-in-law Charlie Illk of Manhattan; cousins Dick Person, Lorene Sullivan, Sherry Scanlon, Kathleen Stone; along with a host of nieces and nephews.
