Sylvia Lorraine Joy, 92, passed from this life on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at Council Grove HealthCare Center where she had been a resident for 10 years.
Lorraine was born May 27, 1920, at Simpson, Kansas, the oldest child of Ralph and Keturah Rathbun Prickett. They moved to Alta Vista the night before she started first grade. She attended school in Alta Vista and graduated with the class of 1938.
Her marriage to Wyeth L. “Bud” Joy was August 15, 1940. They owned and operated the Alta Vista Market, working side by side for over 20 years. When they decided to close the store, Lorraine went to work at Derby Food Center at Kansas State University, retiring from the Department of Housing in 1985.
Lorraine was very active in the community. She was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, served offices in UMW, and made many worship centers, banners, and costumes. She also was a member of numerous organizations including Hi Plane EHU, Chamber of Commerce, Vets Wives and Thrift Store; was a Cub Scouts Den Mother, 4-H knitting leader, and was instrumental in helping get the Pottowatomie-Wabaunsee Regional Library started.
Her talents and interests were many. She enjoyed making something from nothing. She was an artist and a seamstress. She loved plants, flowers and flower arranging.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents, her brother David Prickett; her husband Bud Joy in 2000; two sons, Tad in 1952 during the polio epidemic and Brent in 2004.
Survivors are her daughter, Gloria Smith and husband Sheldon, Alta Vista; grandchildren, Rhett Joy and wife Jennie, Topeka, Elisha Bacon and husband Mike, Council Grove, Jennifer Joy-Cornejo and husband Kevin, Las Vegas, Larissa Hughes and husband Steve, Council Grove, Jana Brewer and husband Carl, Wellington; great-grandchildren Carter, Cole, Macey, Ella, Hadley, Katherine, Audrey, Trey, Noah, Colin, Abigail and Chance; sisters, Shirley Baker, Council Grove, Sharon Carlton, Manhattan, and Molly Ledeboer, Belvue; sister-in-law, Mary Prickett, Rossville; brother-in-law, Carrol Joy, Alta Vista; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
