Harriette L. Merritt, 87, of Manhattan, formerly of Dwight, KS, passed away on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS. A funeral service will take place 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 20, 2015, at the Dwight United Methodist Church with Reverend Duane Andres officiating. A visitation will be held Tuesday, January 20, 2015, from 10:00 am. to 11:00 am. at United Methodist Church prior to the funeral service.
Harriette was born on January 30, 1927, the daughter of Harry J. and Birdie (Crute) Swartz. She lived in the Dwight area her entire life.
Harriette devoted her life to being a homemaker and raising five children. She was a member of the Dwight United Methodist Church where she was involved with the Ladies Aid at the church. She worked and volunteered many hours at the Thrift Shop in Council Grove.
On March 7, 1942, she married Asie Merritt in Morris County, KS. Harriett and Asie enjoyed spending time with each other fishing, camping and gardening.
Survivors include one son, Harry "Butch" Merritt of Wakefield, KS, four daughters, Peggy Ann Matthews of Independence, MO, Carrie Louise Sandborn of Blue Springs, MO, Barbara Lynn Skelton of Hartford, KS and Birdie Kay Smith of Ogden, KS. She is also survived by one sister, Carleen Bach of Topeka, KS, twenty one grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and four sisters.
